Nominating Committee list of nominees for 2026 Board of Directors candidates
Rob McGarrah
I am excited about the possibility of being a member of the Hollow Rock Board of Directors. My family joined Hollow Rock in 2022, and we consider it our neighborhood club, as we live in “the corridor” between 15-501 and Hollow Rock. My wife and I are active in the tennis community here, playing on and captaining multiple USTA teams each season, and participating in clinics and tennis social events. My teenage daughter has been in the juniors’ program since we joined the club and will serve as a counselor-in-training during some of the Hollow Rock summer camps this year. Through these activities, we have formed great friendships and found a wonderful community, who I would be thrilled to represent on the Board.
Professionally, I am a physician (cardiologist)-scientist at Duke, where I lead a basic science research laboratory and focus my clinical practice on preventive cardiology. Running a laboratory is very similar to running a small business – raising money/securing funding, budgeting those funds to successfully complete the proposed work, hiring and managing staff, and reporting on the progress of funded science. I believe these skills will serve me well as a member of the Board and as a steward of Hollow Rock to help ensure the club’s ongoing health and success into the future.

What an amazing Club! Tessa, Alex, Owen and I have enjoyed membership for over 25 years. Hollow Rock has grown with Durham and Chapel Hill developing into a model of athletic and community excellence. Five consecutive years of Best of Durham awards describes our terrific team of staff and management. It seems to me that our club is in a near ideal position to consider what it might be 5 and 10 years from now.
About me: I grew-up in New Orleans, graduated from the Naval Academy, moved to the RTP in 1985, retired from IBM and now serve as Executive Director of the North Carolina Submarine Foundation. It would both an honor and a pleasure to re-join the Board and to help our club continue its positive trajectory on behalf of our interesting and fun membership.

I am excited to be nominated as a candidate for the Hollow Rock Board of Directors. My family and I have enjoyed being members for the past 15+ years and have been thrilled with the improvements over that time. While our kids have left the state to pursue college and careers, my wife and I enjoy our newfound flexibility to play pickleball/tennis and get together with friends we’ve made over the years thanks to Hollow Rock. I have served on the board previously, first as Treasurer and then as President.
When I’m off the court, I help manage the pension plan for state employees and retirees at the North Carolina Investment Authority. My background is in investments and finance, and I have an undergraduate degree in economics as well as a master’s in business administration.
I’m passionate about Hollow Rock and will do my best to continue the club’s pursuit of providing its members with a high-quality experience with an eye towards constant improvement. I am confident I can make a positive contribution to the club and would be honored to have a hand in its future success.
